Not only did we have a special prayer night for FNF this week, but a couple students and I joined a local church in a prayer walk of Carlisle. The church meets in the Carlisle Theater right downtown and really focuses on reaching out to the local community for Jesus. Dickinson being part of the community, they are very concerned about the Dickinson campus as well. They invited us to join them for their pray walk because Dickinson was one of the areas they would be covering.
We met at 8 am at the church office. The total group was composed of about 15-20 people. After an initial opening prayer we split up into strategic groups so that we could cover the whole town. One of the men from the church joined the two students and I in prayer walking Dickinson. We basically walked in a big square around the campus. For those of you who know Carlisle, we walked down S West St, turned right onto Mooreland Ave, left onto High St, right down Cherry St, right onto Louther and then right onto S West St and went back to the church office from there.
If you have never done a prayer walk before (I never had before last year in Bologna), you basically just pray out loud as you walk for the places that you walk by. It appears to others as if you're in conversation with the people you're walking with, although in reality you're in conversation with God. It was a really great experience to have with students, and having a member of the church who prayed with us and clearly had a heart for the college made it that much better.
We prayed for the buildings we walked by and what went on in them, whether they were student dorms, administration buildings, academic buildings, you name it. We covered the whole campus in prayer, praying for specific situations associated with the places we walked by as we knew them and when we didn't asked for God's peace in those places and for His love to be revealed. We prayed for Christian students, faculty & admin to be lights for Jesus on campus.
After about an hour of praying, we gathered back in the church office, joined hands in a circle and closed in more prayer. It had been overcast during the walk, but God held the rain until we were done :)
